Animation showreel

My first animation job was working at Aardman animations. I loved working there!
They gave me alot of training in the job, and I did some "additional animation" on the film Chicken Run,
including alot of the sinning chickens from the following sequence.
Please click the image to link to a video on youtube.

Below are a set of training exercises I did at Aardman. This was back in 2001, when we still used video!
So yeah, not great video quality. However, they DO show my ability to actually animate.
They show weight changes, expression, timing and the other major factors in being able to animate.

VIDEO GAME WORK

I always wanted to work on video games, and so after three years at Aardman I left to take a job at Free Radical Design
I did the eponimous Maiden running away on Timeplitters 2 Notre Dame level, then got moved onto Second Sight as it kicked off.
I love games, and was pretty much the only animator on the team who wanted to work on "in game" animations.
Most of the team wanted to do the cut scenes! So I managed the assets for the ingame animations, and did a good 80% of the game interactions.
This included running, shooting, opening doors, climbing, falling and all the other animations that make the player and NPCs work in game.
In this role I worked closely with the coders to implement the characters into the game.
Below are two links to videos on Youtube. The first is a funny little retro review of the game, showing all the character interactions.
The second is just a straight sequence of all ingame animations, its about three minutes.

I am dedicated to making the gaming experiance as good as I can. When Timeplitters: Future Perfect was about to get released
the animation team did not have enough time to implement "pick" animations for the charaters, so myself and another collegue
volunteered to do them. Between us we made animation sequences for all the characters in about three weeks!

UNI FILMS

If you are into some grimy retro crazyness please watch these two films I made for university.
I studied animation and interactive arts at the University of Wales. The first film is my final piece.
I animated it on an Amiga 1200, then tranferred that to Beta video, then went from video to 16mm film for assessment.
This was then put onto VHS, and from there finally to computer file again! So yeah, if you like process then this is for you!
The second film was drawn with charcoal on paper.

Thanks for looking at my show reel!
I got blinded by a sword while doing Viking reenactment, and left Free Radical after about four years.
Since I have been a small business owner at Ramshackle Games.
It has taught me how to manage projects, balance finances and work all hours!
I'm also a proud Dad and husband.
